Green Screens

Virtual and Immersive Production Studio

Dr Nina Willment created the Green Screens VR experience during her Researcher in Residence placement at the University of Nottingham’s Virtual and Immersive Production Studio.

Through her residency Nina explored how virtual and immersive technologies could be used to tell new and informative climate stories.

This led to a VR meta theatre experience which focussed on some of the hidden environmental geographies of virtual and immersive technologies themselves.

How it was done

Approach

During her six-month residency, Nina created a VR (virtual reality) climate story which examined the sustainability tensions associated with the production of virtual and immersive production technology.

The VR experience was designed to be a meta theatre experience for audiences who could explore the environmental and social impacts of VIP production technology through the VR headset the audience members were physically wearing.

A hologram then introduced audiences to the Circular Economy as a springboard for encouraging audiences to think about routes to inprove VIP technology sustainability and the digital devices they use.

The CRISS Tool helped Nina to translate climate research (which Nina noted to be predominantly complex, dry and removed from human experiences), into a story which had relevance, significance and connected with audiences on a meaningful and emotional level.

What was achieved

Results

Nina said that the CriSS Tool was invaluable to her throughout the residency project.

The open-ended nature of the CRISS questions ensured that Nina was constantly reflexive and thinking critically about the stories she was telling and sharing with audiences during the VR and hologram.

How it helped

Outcomes

Nina began using the CriSS Tool at the start of her project, where she engaged with the different topics in a linear order to help ignite her storytelling narrative. Then throughout the project, Nina repeated the process, and returned to specific sections of the tool.

What they said...

"Working with the CriSS Tool enabled me to produce rich research stories which translated complex ideas (e.g., the water intensive process of lithium mining) into compelling narratives that connected individual audience members to the environmental realities being lived by other people around the world."
